Jannik Sinner triumphed over Grigor Dimitrov with a convincing 6-3, 6-1 victory to clinch his first Miami Open title and ascend to the world number two ranking.
During the match on Sunday, March 31, Sinner executed a decisive passing shot against the Bulgarian, securing a pivotal break in the initial set. He sealed the set with an impressive backhand winner, eliciting cheers from the crowd at Hard Rock Stadium.
The 32-year-old Dimitrov, who has seen a resurgence in his career this season, struggled to counter Sinner’s impeccable performance in the second set. Dimitrov’s backhand into the net gave Sinner a 3-1 lead, and a misjudged overhead shot extended Sinner’s lead to 5-1. Dimitrov did not attempt to retrieve Sinner’s backhand winner on the match’s final point.
Sinner, the Australian Open champion, added this victory to his collection, marking his second Masters 1000 title after last year’s win in Canada. With an impressive streak of winning 25 out of his last 26 matches, the 22-year-old has faced only three defeats since the U.S. Open last year.
Ascending to the world number two spot on Monday, surpassing Carlos Alcaraz, Sinner acknowledged the increased expectations and competition he will face as he enters the claycourt season.
