Argentina’s coach Lionel Scaloni expressed his hopes for a peaceful Copa America final following recent disturbances involving fans and players during the semifinal match between Colombia and Uruguay. In that incident, following Colombia’s 1-0 win in Charlotte, North Carolina, Uruguay’s players ended up in a physical altercation with Colombian fans in the stands.
Looking ahead to the upcoming final where Argentina will compete against Colombia at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Scaloni emphasized the importance of the event being celebratory. During a press conference on Saturday, he mentioned, “I hope the fans have a party, I want it with all my heart. It would be a joy for everyone if it ends well, beyond just winning the title.”
Scaloni also supported the Uruguayan players, understanding their reaction to seeing family members attacked in the stands, and expressed a desire for such incidents not to recur.
The final could potentially be Angel Di Maria’s last international game, though Scaloni indicated that his participation is not certain and will depend on what is best for the team. “We hope that everything goes well and that Angel can retire in the best possible way,” Scaloni added.
Argentina, having defeated Canada 2-0 in their semifinal, aims to continue their success following their 2021 Copa America win in Brazil, the Intercontinental final victory over Italy in 2022, and their World Cup triumph in Qatar against France. Scaloni highlighted the unique pressure and excitement of finals, stating, “It is a final and every final has its nuances. We will try to play it and win it, as every team that goes to a final knows the flavor of it and what’s at stake.”
