Anthony Edwards delivered a standout performance for the Minnesota Timberwolves, leading them to a victory over the defending champion Denver Nuggets in Game 1 of the Western Conference Semifinals on May 4th. Edwards scored a playoff career-high 43 points as the Timberwolves triumphed 106-99 on the Nuggets’ home court.
This postseason, Edwards has consistently excelled, surpassing 33 points in four out of five playoff games. His efforts have been instrumental in Minnesota’s undefeated run in the playoffs, including a 4-0 sweep against the Phoenix Suns in the first round.
In this latest victory, Edwards also contributed seven rebounds, three assists, two blocks, and a steal. Remarkably, this was the third occasion he scored 35 or more points in the five postseason games this season.
Edwards’ performance was crucial from the start, scoring 13 points in the first quarter alone and helping the Timberwolves to an early 18-4 lead. However, the Nuggets responded robustly, ending the first quarter on a 21-5 run to lead 25-23.
The second quarter saw a more subdued scoring from both sides, with the Nuggets edging it 19-17, leaving Minnesota trailing by four at halftime. The Timberwolves, however, surged back in the second half, outscoring Denver 33-27 in the third quarter. The Nuggets struggled to keep pace in the final quarter, which Minnesota also won 33-28.
Minnesota was more efficient in shooting, hitting 52.4% from the field compared to Denver’s 46.7%, and also led in rebounds 42-34. Notably, this game marked the first time the Nuggets failed to score 100 points in this season’s playoffs.
The teams will meet again for Game 2 on Monday, May 6th, back in Denver.
