U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, during his visit to Israel, called on Hezbollah to refrain from actions that might lead to a more extensive conflict, especially given the ongoing skirmishes along the Israel-Lebanon border following the conflict with Hamas. Austin emphasized the importance of avoiding escalation into a broader war at a joint press briefing with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
Austin’s comments came amidst increasing tensions and cross-border exchanges of fire, primarily involving the Israeli army and the Iran-supported Hezbollah, which has expressed solidarity with Hamas.
Highlighting the U.S. stance on the situation, Austin stated, “We’ve been clear that we don’t want to see this conflict widen into a larger war or a regional war.”
When questioned about the possibility of an Israeli ground operation in the north, Gallant mentioned that diplomacy remains the preferred approach. However, he also noted that Israel is prepared for any necessary action.
Since the Israel-Hamas conflict began in early October, over 130 individuals have been reported killed on the Lebanese side of the border, based on AFP figures. This number includes mostly Hezbollah fighters, along with a Lebanese soldier and 17 civilians, among whom are three journalists. On the Israeli side, five civilians and seven soldiers have reportedly lost their lives.
