France is “fully committed to achieving de-escalation” between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, stated its permanent representative to the U.N.
Nicolas de Rivière expressed France’s deep concern over the worsening situation along the Blue Line and reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to de-escalation and promoting a diplomatic solution to prevent a full-scale war. Speaking ahead of a U.N. Security Council meeting, he emphasized that such a conflict would have unbearable and catastrophic consequences for both countries and the region.
“It is crucial that all parties exercise restraint and fully adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law, particularly regarding the protection of civilians,” de Rivière added.
He reiterated the clear framework established by the Security Council: “All parties must fully respect and implement Security Council resolution 1701 (2006).”
“France is in contact with both parties to find the conditions to implement this resolution and return to a cessation of hostilities,” the representative said.
De Rivière also highlighted Paris’ “full support” for UNIFIL’s efforts. He emphasized that all parties are responsible for ensuring the safety and security of UNIFIL personnel, whose freedom of movement must be fully respected and unimpeded. He assured that France will work towards renewing UNIFIL’s mandate in the coming days, based on the principles established by Resolution 1701.
