The Netherlands secured a commanding 4-0 win against Hungary in their decisive Nations League match on Saturday, while Germany delivered a record-breaking 7-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Heading into the game, both the Netherlands and Hungary were level on five points, with the winner guaranteed to progress alongside Germany from Group A3 to the quarterfinals. The Dutch side established early control with first-half penalties from Wout Weghorst and Cody Gakpo, followed by second-half goals from Denzel Dumfries and Teun Koopmeiners to seal the result.
Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk acknowledged the team’s strong performance while noting room for improvement. The game, held at the Johan Cruyff Arena, was temporarily halted in the seventh minute due to a medical emergency involving Hungary’s assistant coach, Adam Szalai. The 36-year-old received immediate attention and was stretchered off as players and fans applauded. The Hungarian Football Association later confirmed that Szalai was stable and conscious in an Amsterdam hospital.
Shortly after the interruption, the Netherlands took the lead through Weghorst’s penalty, awarded following a handball by Tamas Nikitscher. The Dutch continued to dominate, with Gakpo converting a second penalty in the 11th minute of added time after Donyell Malen was fouled in the box. Dumfries extended the lead with a volley early in the second half, and Koopmeiners capped the scoring with a header in the closing stages.
Meanwhile, Germany solidified their position atop Group A3 with a dominant 7-0 victory over Bosnia, the largest margin of victory in the Nations League’s six-year history. Jamal Musiala opened the scoring within two minutes, heading in from a Joshua Kimmich cross. Tim Kleindienst doubled the lead in the 23rd minute, and Kai Havertz added a third before halftime after a quick exchange with Florian Wirtz.
Wirtz continued his stellar performance in the second half, scoring twice, including a spectacular swerving free-kick. Substitute Leroy Sane and Kleindienst each added a goal, with the latter finishing a precise cross from Antonio Rudiger. The win places Germany five points clear of the Netherlands with one match remaining.
In Group B1, Georgia and Ukraine played to a 1-1 draw, leaving Georgia two points ahead of fourth-placed Ukraine. Albania and the Czech Republic also drew 0-0, keeping the Czechs at the top of the group with eight points, narrowly ahead of second-placed Georgia.
In Group B4, Turkey held onto first place after a goalless draw with Wales, despite a missed penalty in the 89th minute by Kerem Akturkoglu. Elsewhere, Iceland secured a 2-0 win over Montenegro to remain competitive in the standings.
