The Phoenix Theatre in London transformed into Hawkins, Indiana, on Thursday, marking the launch of Netflix’s stage adaptation of its hugely successful sci-fi series, “Stranger Things.” This stage play, titled “Stranger Things: The First Shadow,” is set in 1959, offering a prequel story to the original series, set two decades earlier.
Developed with insights from the series’ creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, the theatrical rendition provides an intriguing backstory to some of the series’ well-known characters. The narrative focuses on the younger days of Jim Hopper and Joyce Maldonado as they navigate typical teenage life, dealing with issues like cars and classes. The plot thickens with the arrival of new students, leading to unexpected mysteries.
Matt Duffer, present at the premiere in London’s West End, emphasized the play’s importance, highlighting how it illuminates the characters’ pasts and teases the direction of the series’ final season.
Since its 2016 debut on Netflix, “Stranger Things” has enjoyed immense popularity, becoming the platform’s top-watched English language series. The show, set in the enigmatic town of Hawkins, has enthralled viewers with its mix of supernatural phenomena and relatable characters.
The series’ fifth and final season has been delayed due to Hollywood strikes, but Matt Duffer revealed that filming is set to resume in January for a year-long production. He promised a grand finale to the series, acknowledging the challenges and high expectations but expressing confidence in its rewarding nature.
Netflix aims to expand “Stranger Things” into a broader franchise. Beyond the stage play, the company has also approved an animated spinoff series.
