Highlights: LaLiga: Mbappe Strikes Again as Real Madrid Survive Late Alaves Surge

Kylian Mbappe continued his scoring streak, netting in his fourth consecutive match as Real Madrid narrowly defeated Alaves 3-2 in a La Liga clash on Tuesday. The victory brought second-placed Real Madrid within a point of leaders Barcelona, who were set to face Getafe the following day.

Real Madrid initially took control with goals from Lucas Vazquez, Mbappe, and Rodrygo. However, a late rally from Alaves with goals from Carlos Protesoni and Kike Garcia within two minutes during the final stages made for a tense finish. Despite the scare, Carlo Ancelotti’s team managed to cling to their lead.

Ancelotti reflected on the game’s close call, acknowledging that even when a match seems settled, a single slip can shift the momentum. He emphasized the solid performance of his team for the majority of the game, which bolstered their confidence.

From the onset, Madrid asserted dominance, starting strong as Ancelotti had emphasized the need for early intensity in games. Vazquez, back in the starting lineup alongside Vinicius Junior, quickly opened the scoring, connecting on a pass from Vinicius in the first minute.

Madrid’s control continued, with Mbappe scoring his fifth league goal shortly before halftime through a skillful play with Jude Bellingham. Early in the second half, Rodrygo extended Madrid’s lead. Alaves, although mostly on the defensive, saw a couple of attempts hit the woodwork.

The match saw a controversial moment when 18-year-old Madrid substitute Endrick escaped a red card after a clash with an Alaves player. Mbappe, who was substituted off in the 80th minute due to slight discomfort, was said by Ancelotti to be managing an overload to prevent further issues.

Alaves’ late goals added drama but were not enough to overturn Madrid’s lead. The match was Ancelotti’s 300th in charge at Madrid, and it preserved their unbeaten streak in the league, setting the stage for their upcoming derby against Atletico Madrid.

Post-match tensions rose, with Ancelotti expressing frustration at the officiating, feeling that some harsh tackles by Alaves went unchecked while his players were penalized. Alaves coach Luis Garcia Plaza was also upset, particularly about the incident with Endrick, believing it warranted a red card.

The narrow escape highlighted both Madrid’s strengths and vulnerabilities as they prepared for their next significant challenge against Atletico Madrid.
