Tyrese Maxey of the Philadelphia 76ers delivered a stunning performance in Game 5 of the first round of the NBA playoffs, scoring a career-high 46 points and keeping his team in the series against the New York Knicks. With the 76ers trailing 96-90 at Madison Square Garden and only 28 seconds left in regulation, Maxey scored the final seven points to force overtime, while the Knicks added only a single point.
The Knicks, leading the series 3-1, opened overtime by scoring five straight points, but the Sixers responded with a 9-0 run to even the score at 106. The Sixers then went ahead with a four-point lead, and Maxey clinched the game by sinking two free throws, securing a 112-106 victory for Philadelphia.
After the game, Maxey reflected on his clutch performance, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. “Mandatory,” he said. “Our season was on the line. All I was thinking was to find a way to survive.”
Joel Embiid, despite a tough night with nine turnovers and receiving constant booing from the crowd, commented on the atmosphere at MSG. “It’s not hostile. I love New York. It’s one of my favorite cities, and I’ve even had a place here for the last five years. The fans always pick someone to target, and this time it was me, which I enjoy.”
Thanks to Maxey’s heroic effort, Embiid and the Sixers have the chance to extend the series in Game 6, which will be back in Philadelphia on May 2.
