Manchester City vs Sparta Prague Prediction: 23/10/2024

In 2023, Manchester City secured their first-ever Champions League title, but they were unable to defend their crown last season, falling to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals after a tense penalty shootout. This season, Pep Guardiola’s side has shown determination to regain the trophy, but their campaign began with a somewhat underwhelming 0-0 draw against Inter Milan.

However, they rebounded with a commanding 4-0 victory over Slovan Bratislava, a match that could have ended in an even bigger margin. In the Premier League, City entered the international break in second place, just behind Liverpool, despite narrowly securing a 3-2 win over Fulham. Before their next Champions League clash, the Sky Blues will face Wolverhampton in the domestic league.

Sparta Prague, on the other hand, makes a return to the Champions League after several years of absence, having often stumbled in the summer qualifying rounds. Despite their lack of recent experience in the competition, the Czech side performed well in their opening matches, securing a 3-0 win against Salzburg and earning a solid 1-1 draw on the road against Stuttgart.

However, their form in the Czech league has faltered, with back-to-back losses to Sigma Olomouc (2-3) and in the Prague derby against Slavia (1-2). They aim to regain their momentum against Slovan Liberec before the challenging trip to Manchester.

Manchester City could be boosted by the return of Belgian playmaker Kevin De Bruyne, who missed the international break. However, they will be without world-class defensive midfielder Rodri, who is out for the season. Dutch defender Nathan Aké and promising young winger Bobb are also sidelined.

Despite these absences, City’s attacking power remains formidable, with Erling Haaland leading the line, having already netted 10 goals in the Premier League and one in the Champions League. Players like Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, Jérémy Doku, Jack Grealish, and young talent McAtee, who scored against Slovan Bratislava, will also be key contributors.

For Sparta Prague, summer signing Elias Cobbaut remains unavailable, as does defender Garcia, who joined from Bilbao. However, they will rely on attacking threats like wingers Veljko Birmancevic (3 goals, 2 assists in the league), Lirim Krasniqi (3 goals), Lukas Haraslin (3 goals), and striker Olatunji (3 goals in the league, 1 goal and 1 assist in the Champions League). In midfield, former Ajaccio player Qazim Laci, who scored on matchday one, will be crucial, while Finnish midfielder Kaan Kairinen, who scored a brilliant free-kick against Stuttgart, could make an impact.

Prediction

Despite being one of the Champions League’s heavyweights, Manchester City have been involved in 32 consecutive home matches with under 3.5 goals scored. Similarly, Sparta Prague has followed this trend in 19 of their last 20 away games. It would be surprising to see more than three goals in this encounter.

Prediction: Manchester City 1 : 1 Sparta Prague
