French President Emmanuel Macron has urged Israel to prevent any further escalation of tensions, with a particular emphasis on Lebanon. This appeal comes in the wake of a Beirut strike, attributed to Israel, which resulted in the death of Saleh al-Arouri, the deputy leader of Hamas. Macron communicated this message in a phone call with Israeli minister and member of the war cabinet, Benny Gantz.
During the conversation, Macron stressed the importance of steering clear of actions that could intensify the situation, especially in Lebanon. He assured that France would continue to relay these messages to all involved parties, whether directly or indirectly engaged in the region. This statement was issued by the Elysee Palace.
The Israeli military has indicated its readiness for various outcomes, heightening concerns that the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip may escalate into a broader regional crisis. Israeli army spokesman Daniel Hagari didn’t directly address the killing of Arouri but mentioned that the military is highly prepared for any situation, both defensively and offensively.
The death of Arouri, a prominent Hamas figure, marks a significant escalation, being the first attack in the Lebanese capital since the onset of hostilities. This incident amplifies the widespread apprehensions about the possibility of the Israel-Hamas war expanding into a larger regional conflict.
In his dialogue with Gantz, Macron reiterated the necessity of a sustainable ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. He also expressed grave concern over the increasing civilian casualties in Gaza and the ensuing humanitarian crisis, while reaffirming France’s commitment to Israel’s security.
