Paraguayan swimmer Luana Alonso has been making headlines for controversial reasons. After participating in the Paris Olympics, she was asked to leave due to “inappropriate” behavior and dressing in revealing outfits within the Olympic Village. Luana’s Olympic journey ended after she didn’t advance past the 100m butterfly heats. Reports suggest that her behavior, clothing choices, and social interactions with other athletes caused distractions within the team. She was accused of distracting competitors by socializing while wearing skimpy outfits.
Additionally, Luana faced trouble for defying orders, which led to her expulsion from the Olympic Village. She visited Disneyland without permission, an action that did not sit well with Paraguayan officials. Although competitors are allowed to stay in the village after their events, her unauthorized trip was the final straw. Despite these reports, Luana denied being kicked out, stating on Instagram that she was never expelled and urging people to stop spreading false information.
Larissa Schaerer, the chief of Paraguay’s Olympic Committee, confirmed that Luana was ordered to leave, citing that her presence was creating an inappropriate atmosphere within Team Paraguay. Schaerer thanked Luana for complying with the instructions voluntarily and not spending the night in the athletes’ village.
In response to the controversy, Luana took to Instagram to clarify her situation, asserting that she was not expelled and urging others to stop spreading lies. She expressed her frustration with the situation and announced her retirement from swimming. At 20 years old, Luana stated, “I’m retiring from swimming, thank you all so much for the support! Sorry Paraguay, I only have to thank you! I am very emotional because it was my last race. I have been swimming for so long, 18 years, and I have so many feelings.”
Luana also criticized Paraguayan officials and athletes, expressing a desire to represent the United States instead. She mentioned experiencing tension with her teammates and higher-ups, accusing them of not supporting or trusting their athletes. She stated, “It’s not a pleasure to represent Paraguay and if it were up to me, I would go back to college.”
Meanwhile, Luana shared photos from her time in Paris, including a meeting with tennis icon Rafael Nadal.
