Leverkusen, Roma, Atalanta, Marseille Advance; Liverpool, West Ham, Milan, Benfica Exit Europa League

Liverpool was ousted from the Europa League despite a 1-0 victory over Atalanta in the second leg of their quarterfinal match, concluding their hopes for a treble in manager Jurgen Klopp’s final season. The Italian team’s 3-0 first-leg win was too much for Liverpool to overcome.

“We won the game and that was the reaction we wanted to show,” Klopp expressed post-match. “It was tough, but Atalanta fully deserves to progress.”

Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen, fresh from their first Bundesliga title, drew 1-1 with West Ham, progressing to the semifinals 3-1 on aggregate. They will now face Roma, who eliminated AC Milan with a 2-1 victory to advance 3-1 overall.

West Ham initially led through Michail Antonio’s header, but Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong equalized late to secure the aggregate win. Leverkusen will also face Kaiserslautern in the German Cup final soon after the Europa League final.

In Bergamo, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah converted an early penalty, giving the Reds a glimmer of hope. However, they couldn’t replicate their dominant 5-0 Champions League win over Atalanta from 2020 and fell short of reversing the deficit.

Atalanta now prepares to face Marseille, who beat Benfica 4-2 in a shootout after a 1-0 win tied the aggregate at 2-2.

Although Liverpool has already won the English League Cup, their Premier League aspirations are still alive, albeit they trail leaders Manchester City by two points.

Atalanta has excelled in Europe despite a modest domestic season, reaching the semifinals for only the second time in a European competition.

In Rome, Roma secured a semifinal spot even after being reduced to ten men. Early goals from Gianluca Mancini and Paulo Dybala set the stage, despite a late goal from Milan’s Matteo Gabbia. Roma held on to advance with coach Daniele De Rossi recently renewing his contract.

Milan’s season appears to end trophy-less, trailing Inter by 14 points in Serie A and out of European contention.

Following the exits of Arsenal and Manchester City from the Champions League, Premier League clubs also bowed out of the Europa League. Aston Villa remains the sole English club in European competition, advancing to the Europa Conference League semifinals.

Villa moved past Lille in a dramatic shootout after a late equalizer from Matty Cash. They will face Olympiakos, who also won through penalties. Fiorentina reached the semifinals by defeating Viktoria Plzeƈ and will face Club Brugge, who overcame PAOK.
