Copa America: Lautaro Martinez’s double lifts Messi-less Argentina into QFs against Peru

Despite the absence of star player Lionel Messi due to a hamstring injury and head coach Lionel Scaloni serving a suspension, Argentina secured a 2-0 win over Peru at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium, advancing to the Copa America quarter-finals as Group A leaders. Lautaro Martinez stepped up, scoring both goals for Argentina.

Argentina, having made nine changes to their starting lineup, dominated the match against a lackluster Peru team, which managed only a single shot on goal. Martinez opened the scoring shortly after halftime with a skillful lob over Peru’s goalkeeper Pedro Gallese, following a brilliant pass from Angel Di Maria.

Argentina had an opportunity to extend their lead in the 72nd minute when Jesus Castillo’s handball led to a penalty. However, Leandro Paredes hit the post, keeping the score at 1-0. Martinez then secured his brace in the 86th minute, capitalizing on a long forward pass and scoring past Gallese again, despite protests from Peru over a possible foul during the buildup.

Martinez acknowledged the initial challenge posed by Peru’s defensive tactics but noted that his first goal helped open up the play. Celebrating his form, he expressed his joy and commitment every time he represents Argentina.

Argentina is set to play the Group B runner-up in Houston next Thursday, likely facing either Ecuador or Mexico.

In another Group A match, Canada and Chile played to a goalless draw in Orlando. This result was sufficient for Canada to progress to the quarter-finals. Chile, needing a win to advance, faced additional difficulties after Gabriel Suazo was sent off in the first half. Canadian captain Alphonso Davies praised his team’s effort and resilience in their Copa America debut, highlighting the challenges of facing strong competition. Canada is set to meet the winners of Group B in their next match.
