Kuwait’s new Emir has delivered a critical inaugural speech, rebuking both the parliament and the cabinet.

Kuwait’s new Emir, Sheikh Meshal al-Ahmed al-Sabah, has expressed criticism of the parliament and cabinet in his inaugural speech as he officially assumes the role of the country’s 17th ruler.

Taking over from his half-brother, Sheikh Nawaf, Sheikh Meshal faces the challenging task of addressing Kuwait’s political stagnation and reforming its bloated public sector. He emphasized the need to fulfill national obligations but noted a lack of change or correction in the actions of the parliament and cabinet, which he believes have harmed the interests of the people and the country.

Sheikh Meshal also highlighted issues with public appointments and promotions that do not meet standards of justice and fairness. He pledged to temporarily halt promotions and new appointments and called for a reconsideration of the country’s current reality. Following his speech, the government resigned to allow for the appointment of a new prime minister. Kuwait has faced ongoing political disputes that have hindered economic diversification and contributed to budget deficits and low foreign investment.

Sheikh Meshal’s leadership will be closely watched as he navigates these challenges and selects a crown prince and prime minister.
