On Friday, Yoav Gallant officially stepped down as Israel’s defense minister, replaced by former foreign minister Israel Katz in a formal ceremony, following his dismissal by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier in the week.
Gallant’s removal has sparked widespread protests across Israel, as many citizens viewed him as a moderate voice in Netanyahu’s right-wing government. His dismissal is seen by some as a sign that the government may be deprioritizing efforts to secure the release of hostages still held in Gaza by Hamas.
In his parting remarks, Gallant expressed gratitude to the military and underscored that the war’s mission remains unfinished, emphasizing the importance of securing the return of the remaining 101 hostages to their families and homes.
Katz, a veteran Cabinet member and loyalist to Netanyahu, outlined the goals of his new role: curbing Iranian aggression, dismantling Hamas’s influence, and weakening Hezbollah. He also highlighted the return of hostages as a critical moral priority, affirming his commitment to Israel’s security. Katz assured Gallant, “We share the same beliefs for securing Israel’s future,” and expressed confidence that Israel would emerge stronger from the conflict and current challenges.
