The Israeli military announced early on Wednesday that it had targeted Hezbollah positions in Syria, aiming to prevent the group’s consolidation in the region. This action comes amidst Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza, during which Israel has escalated its military operations, including strikes in Syria, to also address threats from Hezbollah.
According to the Israeli military, the operations were based on detailed intelligence and targeted military infrastructure utilized by Hezbollah in Syria. The military shared footage showing the bombardment of a specific building identified in their intelligence efforts.
Israel’s campaign against Hamas has been intensifying since the group’s attack on October 7 of the previous year, raising international concerns about the conflict’s expansion. The Israeli army has expressed its intention not to tolerate any activities within Syrian territory that might facilitate Hezbollah’s establishment and has held the Syrian government responsible for any actions occurring within its borders.
Moreover, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reported striking several Hezbollah observation posts and terrorist infrastructures in southern Lebanon. Additionally, IDF artillery targeted areas in southern Lebanon, including Dhayra and Tayr Harfa, to neutralize perceived threats.
Following rocket attacks from southern Syria towards the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, Israel retaliated by attacking a Syrian military site. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that Israeli airstrikes targeted locations in Syria, including a weapons depot in Daraa and a military site used by Iran-backed groups and Hezbollah for launching rockets towards the Golan Heights.
Israel has conducted numerous airstrikes in Syria since the onset of the Syrian civil war in 2011, primarily targeting Iran-backed forces. One notable incident on April 1 involved an Israeli strike on an Iranian embassy consular building in Damascus, resulting in the death of 16 people, including seven members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard. Israel has not issued a statement regarding this particular attack.
