The Israeli military is set to establish a new regional brigade along its border with Syria and Lebanon, named the “HeHarim” or Mountains Brigade. This unit will be responsible for operations in the Mount Hermon area and the contested Shebaa Farms, falling under the command of the 210th “Bashan” Division. This formation will take over responsibilities from the current 810th “Hermon” Regional Brigade.
The creation of the HeHarim Brigade aligns with the Israeli army’s strategic adjustments in response to the evolving security dynamics along the northern frontier, emphasizing the brigade’s focus on warfare in rugged and mountainous terrains.
The Israeli military has announced that the brigade will commence operations shortly, with Col. Liron Appleman leading as the initial commander.
This development follows heightened tensions and frequent skirmishes along the Lebanon-Israel border, particularly since the outbreak of conflict in Gaza last October. These clashes have resulted in the deaths of at least 322 individuals in Lebanon, including Hezbollah militants and civilians, and the death of at least 10 soldiers and seven civilians in Israel, as per military sources.
The conflict has also led to significant displacement of populations on both sides of the border, with Israel signaling potential military actions against Hezbollah to facilitate the safe return of its citizens.
