Iran’s unprecedented strikes on Israel escalate conflict

Late on Saturday, Iran initiated a substantial drone and missile assault on Israel, marking a severe escalation in their ongoing covert conflict. This response was in retaliation for a strike on April 1st that targeted Iran’s consular annex in Damascus, which resulted in the deaths of seven members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards, including two generals.

During the attack, Iran employed over 200 drones and ballistic missiles. The operation also saw participation from Iran’s regional allies. Hezbollah, for instance, launched rockets from Lebanon in what it said was a reaction to Israeli attacks on Lebanese villages.

The U.S., on alert due to the increasing tensions, has been actively supporting Israel. President Joe Biden reassured of the U.S.’s unwavering commitment to Israel’s security, following an urgent security meeting.

Globally, the reaction has been one of concern, with multiple countries condemning the escalation and calling for restraint. The U.K. and France both reiterated their support for Israel’s security, while Egypt is actively trying to mediate the situation.

The White House anticipates that the Iranian attack could continue for several hours and has cautioned Iran against further escalation, hinting at severe consequences.

In addition to the aerial assault, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards seized an Israeli-linked container ship in the Gulf earlier the same day, escalating the regional alert level.

Israel has responded by bolstering its national defenses, preparing for additional potential actions from Iran, and closing its airspace temporarily.
