Amos Hochstein, a U.S. mediator, emphasized the necessity of a diplomatic resolution to halt the ongoing conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, which has been escalating for nearly five months.
In a press briefing following his meeting with Speaker Nabih Berri in Beirut, Hochstein underscored that diplomacy is crucial for ceasing the violence along the Lebanon-Israel border. He argued that escalating the conflict serves no one’s interest and dismissed the notion of a ‘limited war’ as unfeasible, pointing out that such escalation would not facilitate the return of displaced people, solve the crisis, or aid in Lebanon’s reconstruction during this pivotal moment in its history.
Highlighting the insufficiency of a temporary ceasefire, Hochstein stated that a comprehensive change in the security dynamics along the Blue Line is essential to ensure the safety of all parties involved. He reiterated the U.S. stance that a diplomatic approach remains the sole viable solution to achieve a sustainable and equitable security arrangement between Lebanon and Israel, aiming for lasting peace.
Hochstein expressed the United States’ commitment to working with international partners to explore strategies that promote prosperity and stability in Lebanon, including international support as a critical component of any agreement.
Regarding the potential extension of a Gaza ceasefire to Lebanon, Hochstein clarified that such an agreement would not necessarily or automatically encompass Lebanon. He indicated that his discussions in Beirut and Israel are directed towards establishing specific “arrangements” that will lead to a diplomatic resolution of the conflict.
