On Monday, Israel executed a strategic operation resulting in the death of a high-ranking Hezbollah Radwan Forces commander in southern Lebanon. This action raises concerns about the possible extension of the Gaza conflict.
The commander, identified as Wissam Tawil, met his demise during an Israeli assault on his vehicle, a Honda SUV, in the village of Khirbet Selm, located approximately 15 kilometers from the Lebanese-Israeli border.
Tawil was noted for his significant role in overseeing Hezbollah activities in southern Lebanon, according to a source who preferred to remain anonymous due to security reasons. The source also indicated that Tawil held multiple senior positions within the Shiite organization.
Further Israeli military activities included airstrikes near Aita al-Shaab and tank shelling at a mosque in the border town of al-Abbasiyya. Additional areas impacted were al-Wazzani, al-Hebbariye, and al-Taybeh.
Israeli media reported a missile strike in Kiryat Shmona in northern Israel earlier that day. In response, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for attacks on Israeli positions at Rwaisat el-Alam and Hadb al-Bustan.
The Israeli army stated that it targeted “numerous Hezbollah positions” along the Lebanese border, coinciding with the anticipated visit of the U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. His visit aims to prevent further escalation of the conflict.
The heightened cross-border violence follows the killing of a senior Hamas militant in Beirut by Israel and subsequent rocket attacks by Hezbollah into Israel targeting an air traffic control base.
This escalation has lent urgency to U.S. diplomatic efforts. Secretary Blinken’s visit is part of a broader Middle East tour focused on averting a regional conflict.
Hezbollah described the rocket attacks as an initial reaction to Israel’s assassination of prominent Hamas leader Saleh al-Arouri in a Hezbollah-controlled area of Beirut the previous week.
Hezbollah’s military strength, reportedly surpassing that of Hamas, has led to Israeli warnings of diminishing patience. Israeli authorities have stated their readiness to resort to military action if diplomatic solutions fail to de-escalate the situation.
