Authorities have identified the gunman and provided details about the casualties from the shooting at former President Donald Trump’s rally on Saturday afternoon in Butler, Pennsylvania. Here’s the latest information:
The Gunman
The FBI has identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, approximately 35 miles south of the rally location. He was killed at the scene by Secret Service agents. Public records indicate he was registered to vote as a Republican, but he had made a small donation to a Democratic-aligned group in 2021.
Further Threats
Authorities stated at a news conference that they do not currently believe there are any additional threats, but emphasized that the investigation is still active. It is too early to definitively conclude whether it was a lone wolf attack.
The Casualties
The shooting resulted in one attendee dead and two others critically injured. All three victims were adult men. Although they have been identified by authorities, their names have not yet been publicly released.
Trump’s Status
A spokesperson confirmed that Trump is “fine,” and the Secret Service stated he is safe. Trump posted on social media that he was hit by a bullet in the “upper part of my right ear.” Early Sunday morning, Trump flew back to Newark, New Jersey.
The Investigation
Multiple federal and state agencies are investigating the incident, including how the shooter accessed his location and the type of weapon used. The FBI has requested the public’s assistance in providing any information, photos, or videos related to the shooting via FBI.gov/butler or by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI.
Biden Returns
President Joe Biden, who was in Delaware at the time of the shooting, flew back to the White House early Sunday morning to continue receiving briefings from law enforcement. Earlier, he confirmed he had spoken with Trump and publicly condemned the shooting.
