Pep Guardiola has extended his contract as manager of Premier League champions Manchester City for another two years, revealing that he could not leave the club during such a critical period. Despite recent speculation about his departure, mainly due to ongoing charges against the club over 115 alleged breaches of financial regulations, Guardiola has decided to stay.
City is currently enduring its worst run under Guardiola’s leadership, with four consecutive losses across all competitions, though they remain second in the Premier League, five points behind Liverpool. Despite these struggles, news emerged on Tuesday that Guardiola, who joined City in 2016 and has since led the club to 18 trophies, including six Premier League titles, would continue as manager.
This decision came after Txiki Begiristain, City’s director of football and a close ally of Guardiola, confirmed he would be leaving at the end of the season. Begiristain will be succeeded by Hugo Viana, formerly of Sporting Lisbon and Newcastle. Guardiola, however, changed his mind about stepping down, especially after the challenges faced in recent weeks. He acknowledged that the team’s struggles were a significant factor in his decision to remain at City until 2027.
Guardiola admitted that at the start of the season, he had considered making this his final year at the club, but the recent difficulties made him feel it was not the right time to leave. He expressed a strong desire not to let the club down and cited the trust and support he received from the club’s leadership as motivating factors for his decision to stay.
Reflecting on his achievements, Guardiola called winning the treble in 2023, which included a historic Champions League title for City, a “dream come true.” He also acknowledged the remarkable feat of winning four consecutive Premier League titles but emphasized that there is still work to be done to maintain such success. His focus now is on rebuilding the team’s stability and consistency.
Guardiola expressed deep affection for the club, stating that Manchester City holds a special place in his heart. He thanked the club’s owner Khaldoon Al Mubarak, chairman Ferran Soriano, Begiristain, and the fans for their continued support. His goal is to add more trophies to the club’s already impressive collection.
City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak also expressed his delight at Guardiola’s decision to stay, praising his dedication and innovative approach to the game. Guardiola’s influence extends beyond Manchester City, as two of his former assistants, Mikel Arteta and Enzo Maresca, are now managing Premier League rivals Arsenal and Chelsea, respectively.
