Germany advanced to the semi-finals of the United Cup, led by a stellar performance from Alexander Zverev. He first triumphed in his singles match against Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece and then joined forces with Laura Siegemund to secure a decisive victory in the mixed doubles.
Maria Sakkari of Greece initially put her team ahead by defeating Angelique Kerber, a three-time Grand Slam champion, with a 6-0 6-3 win. However, Zverev’s win against Tsitsipas, with a score of 6-4 6-4, brought the team scores level.
Zverev was back on the court soon after for the mixed doubles match, partnering with Siegemund. They overcame the Greek duo of Petros Tsitsipas and Sakkari with a 6-3 6-3 win. Zverev acknowledged the teamwork with Siegemund, saying they deserved their semi-finals spot.
In his singles match, Zverev showcased an aggressive style, particularly with his first serve. Tsitsipas, despite hitting 16 winners, made 24 unforced errors, which helped Zverev dominate. Coming off an ankle injury that saw him exit early from last year’s Australian Open, Zverev is optimistic about performing better at the Grand Slam this year, emphasizing the importance of health and a different mindset.
Earlier in the tournament, Sakkari delivered a strong performance against Kerber, who was playing her first tournament after an 18-month maternity break. Sakkari dominated the first set and maintained her lead in the second set, despite a brief comeback from Kerber. Sakkari remarked on her solid gameplay and expected Kerber’s attempt at a comeback, noting the challenge of the match.
The other semi-final of the tournament features Poland taking on France.
