Benny Gantz, an Israeli war cabinet minister, recently communicated with French President Emmanuel Macron regarding the crucial need for international diplomatic intervention in Lebanon. This discussion follows allegations of Israel’s involvement in the assassination of Hamas’s deputy leader, Saleh al-Arouri, through a bold drone strike in Beirut’s southern suburbs.
Gantz, in his statement posted in English on the X platform, expressed his gratitude towards President Macron for France’s commitment to Israel’s security and stability in the region, as well as its efforts in aiding the release of hostages in Gaza.
The conversation also touched on the ongoing war in Gaza, the critical role of international diplomacy in Lebanon, and other significant issues affecting the region.
Since the escalation of border tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, the conflict has resulted in over 160 deaths on the Lebanese side, predominantly Hezbollah fighters but also including civilians and journalists. In contrast, Israel has reported the loss of at least five civilians and nine soldiers.
Hezbollah has been actively launching attacks against Israeli forces and positions, stating that their actions are in solidarity with Hamas. Concurrently, Israel has been conducting strikes in southern Lebanon.
