Aus Open: Djokovic Extends Melbourne Park Streak to 31 Matches

Novak Djokovic of Serbia has successfully advanced to the fourth round of the Australian Open 2024, following a decisive win against Argentina’s Tomás Martín Etcheverry on Friday (January 19). Aiming for his 11th Australian Open title, which would tie the record, Djokovic extended his winning streak at Melbourne Park to 31 matches with a 6-3, 6-3, 7-6 victory over Etcheverry. His next opponent in the fourth round will be the victor of the match between Ben Shelton and Adrian Mannarino.

Djokovic’s Impressive Performance Continues
Entering the match with a 30-match winning streak at the Australian Open, Djokovic faced a challenging opponent in Etcheverry, who had earlier defeated former Wimbledon champion Andy Murray. Djokovic demonstrated his skill and precision, seizing key moments and leveraging opportunities to take the first set. His dominant performance was underscored by an 86% first serve percentage and winning 60% of the points on his second serve.

Djokovic also secured three break points while not conceding any to Etcheverry. The final set was closely contested, culminating in a tiebreaker where Djokovic triumphed 7-2.

At 36 years old, Djokovic has shown remarkable resilience and skill. His 19th appearance at the Australian Open marks a period of dominance where he has not lost at the first Grand Slam of the year since 2018. With only eight defeats in Melbourne’s challenging conditions, Djokovic’s record in the tournament is extraordinary.

Despite his age, Djokovic, who is currently ranked world number 1, continues to demonstrate top-level performance. He reached the finals of all four Grand Slams for the second time in his career in 2023 (the first time being in 2021). With a remarkable Grand Slam record of 27-1 in 2023, Djokovic’s form poses a significant challenge to any player looking to dethrone him in Australia. His only Grand Slam loss in 2023 came at the hands of Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final, where Djokovic battled through five sets.
