Nathan Lyon remains optimistic about Australia’s chances in the Christchurch Test, even as they require 202 more runs with just six wickets in hand. Following New Zealand’s effort to corner the visitors at 34 for four in their pursuit of 279, Australia seemed to be losing momentum. Nevertheless, Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head stabilized the innings, leaving Australia at 77 for four by the end of the third day.
Lyon, in a post-play media interaction, shared that the team’s spirit is high, with a firm belief prevailing in the dressing room that they can successfully complete the chase, which would mark an exceptional victory.
He praised the leadership within the team for fostering confidence among the players, especially in facing a challenging target. Lyon attributed this positive mindset to the guidance of Pat Cummins and Ron (Andrew McDonald), who have played significant roles in motivating the team to believe in victory from any position.
Lyon acknowledged the difficulty of the situation but expressed unwavering belief in Australia’s capability to clinch a win, despite New Zealand’s momentum.
Reflecting on Australia’s track record, Lyon mentioned their rare successes in chasing totals above 270, highlighting their last such victory against England in Edgbaston the previous year, where Australia chased down 282. He recalled another memorable chase in 2011 against South Africa, with Pat Cummins leading the way in his Test debut, while Lyon was prepared to bat at number 11.
Lyon emphasized the team’s confidence and the batsmen’s ability to handle pressure, expressing that the team prides itself on its batting strength and is ready to give their all to turn the situation around. He shared his readiness to contribute with the bat if needed, as the team approached the end of day three with determination.
