Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar has stated Israel’s unwavering commitment to eliminate Hamas leaders globally, including in countries like Qatar, Turkey, and Lebanon, regardless of the time it takes. In recordings broadcast by Kan public broadcaster, Bar emphasized the Israeli cabinet’s directive to target Hamas, drawing a parallel to Israel’s historic operation against those responsible for the 1972 Munich Olympics attack.
Despite Bar’s stark warnings, Hamas has responded indifferently, arguing that carrying out such threats would violate the sovereignty of allied nations.
Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that Israel plans to extend its hunt for Hamas leaders globally, shifting focus from operations in Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reportedly instructed intelligence agencies to devise plans to assassinate Hamas leaders residing abroad, particularly in Turkey, Qatar, and other locations.
The report also mentioned discussions within Israel about the immediate targeting of Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal, who resides in Doha. However, considerations about diplomatic repercussions, particularly in the context of efforts to release hostages, have delayed such actions.
Netanyahu has hinted at these international assassination plans in a recent address, sparking controversy among some who preferred secrecy.
Additionally, the report indicated Israel’s exploration of strategies to shorten the war in Gaza, including the potential expulsion of lower-level Hamas fighters.
