U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on Sunday that there is “every indication” Hezbollah was responsible for the rocket strike in the Israel-annexed Golan Heights, which resulted in the deaths of 12 young people.
“All signs point to Hezbollah being behind the rocket attack. We support Israel’s right to protect its citizens from terrorist acts,” Blinken told reporters in Japan.
The Israeli military reported that the victims were hit on Saturday by an Iranian-made rocket with a 50-kilogram warhead, fired by Hezbollah at a football field in the Druze Arab town of Majdal Shams.
Hezbollah, however, denied involvement in the attack.
“We are committed to ending the Gaza conflict, which has lasted far too long and claimed too many lives. Our goal is for Israelis, Palestinians, and Lebanese to live without the threat of conflict and violence,” Blinken said.
“We are in discussions with the Israeli government. We support their right to defend their citizens and are determined to ensure they can do so,” he stated in Tokyo.
“However, we do not wish to see the conflict escalate or spread. Preventing this has been a priority since October 7, and we will continue to pursue it.
“The best way to achieve this in a lasting manner is through a ceasefire in Gaza, which we are working on tirelessly,” he added.
