Carlos Alcaraz, the world number 2 and a two-time grand slam champion, began his Australian Open campaign with an impressive victory over French player Richard Gasquet on January 16. Despite some early difficulties, Alcaraz secured the match with a score of 7(7)-6(5), 6-1, 6-2.
In his post-match comments, Alcaraz acknowledged that he faced challenges in the first set, which was ultimately decided in a tie-break. He mentioned that Gasquet played well, but he gradually improved his game as the match progressed.
The first set was tightly contested, with both players showcasing their skills and preventing the other from gaining a significant advantage. One notable moment occurred when Gasquet ended a 22-shot rally with a backhand winner during the tie-break, thrilling the crowd at the Rod Laver Arena. Alcaraz responded with his own backhand shot to level the score at 4-4 and eventually secured the tie-breaker 7-5.
Alcaraz praised Gasquet, describing him as an amazing player with exceptional talent, particularly highlighting his impressive backhand.
Notably, Alcaraz excelled in his serving, winning 73 percent of points on his first serve and 72 percent on his second, compared to Gasquet’s 59 percent and 39 percent, respectively. The Spaniard outperformed his opponent in total points won, securing 121 points to Gasquet’s 90, and he won 19 games compared to Gasquet’s nine.
Alcaraz also capitalized on break point opportunities, winning four out of 16, while Gasquet failed to secure any. He achieved seven consecutive game victories during the match and also had a streak of winning 10 consecutive points.
In the next round, Alcaraz is set to face Italian player Lorenzo Sonego on Wednesday, January 18.
