Australia to host 2025 F1 season opener

The 2025 Formula One season will kick off in Australia, marking Melbourne’s return as the season opener for the first time in six years, displacing Bahrain which held the spot since 2021. The FIA unveiled the calendar for the upcoming season on Friday, noting that the season will start on March 16 in Melbourne and wrap up on December 7 in Abu Dhabi, commemorating the 75th anniversary of Formula One’s world championship.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne did not host any races in 2020 and 2021. However, it’s set to reclaim its opening race status in 2025 due to the overlap of Ramadan with the usual race schedule in March next year.

The season’s first race in Europe will occur at the Imola circuit in May, which is part of a triple-header also featuring the Monaco and Spanish Grands Prix on successive weekends.

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, expressed his gratitude towards the FIA, promoters, host cities, and national sports authorities for their efforts in organizing the schedule, which promises another thrilling year for the sport. He also thanked the Formula 1 teams, drivers, and global fans for their continued passion and enthusiasm for the sport.

Details on the testing schedule and the sprint races calendar will be announced later. The current season includes sprint races at six Grands Prix locations, including China, Miami, Austria, the United States (Austin), Brazil, and Qatar.
