An attack on a Cayman Islands-flagged tanker in a critical maritime route near Yemen was reported by a U.S. military official on Monday. The Swan Atlantic, a carrier of chemicals and oil products, was targeted in this latest incident among a series of attacks on ships traversing the Red Sea and the strategically important Bab el-Mandeb Strait.
These assaults have been attributed to the Houthi rebels in Yemen, who are supported by Iran. The Houthis have declared their intent to target vessels associated with Israel as a gesture of solidarity with Palestinian militants.
According to the U.S. official, the attack on the Swan Atlantic involved multiple projectiles and occurred around 9 a.m. local time. The USS Carney, a U.S. naval vessel assigned to provide security in the region, responded to the situation. The official, who wished to remain anonymous, disclosed these details.
Additionally, the British military’s United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, responsible for monitoring Middle Eastern shipping lanes, confirmed an incident in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait near Yemen’s Mocha port. They issued a warning to nearby vessels to remain vigilant.
The report included the observation of a potential explosion approximately two nautical miles from the targeted vessel. As of the report, the Houthi rebels had not yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
