Arsenal’s pursuit of the Premier League title encountered a setback during their 1-1 draw against Brighton, a game marked by Declan Rice’s first career red card, while Aston Villa secured a 2-1 victory at Leicester.
Both Arsenal and Brighton entered the match with perfect records from their first two games. Arsenal initially took the lead when Kai Havertz capitalized on a mistake by Lewis Dunk to score. However, the match’s dynamic shifted dramatically right after halftime when Rice was controversially sent off for kicking the ball away as Brighton’s Joel Veltman was preparing to take a free-kick, resulting in his second yellow card.
Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, expressed strong dissatisfaction with the decision, pointing out the inconsistency in officiating, especially since similar incidents in the first half were overlooked.
Brighton took advantage of the extra player when Joao Pedro scored following a save from Arsenal’s David Raya. The game remained open with chances for both teams to clinch a win, including saves on attempts by Havertz and a missed header by Georginio Rutter.
Arsenal ended up with a draw, potentially losing ground in the title race, especially with Manchester City poised to potentially take the lead after their upcoming match against West Ham.
In other Premier League action, Aston Villa rebounded from their previous loss to Arsenal by defeating Leicester 2-1. Amadou Onana and Jhon Duran were instrumental in the win, with Duran scoring shortly after substituting in for Ollie Watkins. Leicester’s Facundo Buonanotte scored a late goal, but it wasn’t enough to avoid defeat.
Elsewhere, Brentford defeated Southampton 3-1, Bournemouth staged a dramatic comeback against Everton, scoring three goals late in the game to overturn a 2-0 deficit, and Ipswich Town earned their first Premier League point in 22 years with a 1-1 draw against Fulham. Meanwhile, Nottingham Forest and Wolves also drew 1-1.
The weekend’s premier match features Manchester United hosting Liverpool at Old Trafford.
