In a surprising turn of events at the ATP Buenos Aires tournament on Saturday, world number two Carlos Alcaraz was defeated in straight sets by Chile’s Nicolas Jarry during the semi-finals.
Alcaraz, who was the defending champion and participating in his first event since his quarter-final exit at the Australian Open, lost 7-6 (7/2), 6-3 to the 28-year-old Jarry.
Having won two Grand Slam titles, Alcaraz was aiming for his first final appearance since his loss to Novak Djokovic at the Cincinnati Masters in August, and his first victory since Wimbledon in July.
This match marked Jarry’s initial triumph over Alcaraz in their three encounters, securing his victory on the second match point after nearly two hours of play.
Jarry expressed his elation over his win against Alcaraz, considering him one of the top players. He acknowledged the physical challenges he faced in previous matches and was pleased with his comeback.
Initially struggling to score on Alcaraz’s serve, Jarry gradually improved. He managed to avoid any break points in the first set and, after exchanging breaks early in the second set, he achieved a crucial break in the eighth game.
Jarry is set to compete against Argentine wildcard Facundo Diaz Acosta, who is ranked 87th, in the clay-court tournament’s final on Sunday.
