BEIRUT: Efforts were ongoing Sunday to retrieve the body of an 8-year-old girl who drowned a day earlier along with a relative while swimming off the rocky Saadiyat beach in Chouf, south of Beirut.

The body of the relative, 29-year-old Othman Ahmad al-Husseini, was retrieved from the sea earlier Sunday by members of the Civil Defense's marine rescue unit.

The Civil Defense had rescued two of Husseini's children the day before. One of them, an 11-year-old girl, died Sunday. The other, a 7-year-old boy, remains in the intensive care unit of a local hospital.

The Civil Defense had Saturday called on seagoers to stay out of the water, citing strong currents and large waves in addition to a large presence of jellyfish.

This article previously stated that the 8-year-old whose body the Civil Defense was searching for was also Husseini’s child. In fact, the two were related but not father and daughter. Also, this story previously misidentified the gender of the 8-year-old child whose body Civil Defense was attempting to retrieve. The Daily Star regrets these errors.
