SIDON, Lebanon: Stormy, wet weather Monday did not deter a handful of brave swimmers who risked the strong waves for New Year's Day dip in south Lebanon's Sidon.

"It is a pleasure to swim in the rainy weather, and you feel comfortable and relaxed and do not think about low temperatures," Mahmoud Hengir, fresh from the cold sea, told The Daily Star.

Meanwhile, other health-conscious residents were seen jogging along the seafront despite the inclement weather.

In Sidon, shops commercial markets closed to mark the New Year and the commercial port of Sidon was also closed. While fishermen were unable to put to sea due to the rainy weather, several said they expected the waves to bring fish closer to the shore.
