Nasrallah mocks US senator for making threats

Hizbullah’s leader says US Senator Bob Graham should produce some evidence to back his threats against Lebanon.

“There are some senators who are specialized in Hizbullah, who appear to be influenced by domestic factors,” Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said Tuesday. “The biggest critic of Hizbullah, the chairman of the (US Senate) intelligence committee, has a Lebanese wife. If he had an American wife it might be better for us.”

Nasrallah, who made the remarks at an iftar in Beirut’s southern suburbs, was responding to Graham’s weekend call for the United States to attack Hamas and Hizullah before taking on Iraq.

“He doesn’t have information or evidence” that Hizbullah is massing forces on the border to open Israel’s northern front. “He can ask his ambassador (Vincent Battle), who’s always taking tours of the South. Ask him if he’s found even a pistol or a machine gun.”

Nasrallah said any military strike on Hizbullah would be counter-productive for the country that carries it out.

“If these attacks take place, is that supposed to change things? The resistance will only increase its determination.”

“If they want to put us on a (terrorist) list, or say that we are the biggest threat, that’s their business. Every time you hear something in the coming weeks, just remember that it won’t make any difference,” he added, responding to the rash of statements threatening the resistance by US politicians and Israeli officials in recent months.

But Nasrallah did acknowl-edge the importance of another set of statements, namely those following Friday’s attack in Hebron that killed a dozen Israeli soldiers and security guards.

Apparently referring to statements by US officials and UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan condemning the killings, he said the remarks proved the futility of any debate about tactics.

“We demand an apology to the Palestinians,” he said. “At first, they said that some poor worshippers were killed, but then they tripped up. Netanyahu sent this version out to the world, then it turned out that they were all soldiers. “It’s a scandal for all self-respecting countries … They didn’t even investigate first. The information came from the Israeli Foreign Ministry, which means it had come down from Heaven.”

He said debates by Palestinians about whether resistance should target civilians and settlers or drop attacks within the 1948 borders were useless because of foreign powers’ automatic siding with Israel.

“Palestinians are wasting their time with this Byzantine debate. And Arabs are wasting their time too. The attack was against armed soldiers in the lands occupied in 1967. And still the world condemned it.”

Nasrallah said there was no term called “freedom fighters” in the world’s dictionary, “unless they’re fighting for the interests of the United States.”
