Opening the doors to state legitimacy

The leaders of Hizbullah and Amal have endorsed a seemingly non-monolithic step: inviting the police and security forces to take action in Beirut's southern suburbs, where crime and related social problems seem to have overwhelmed the ability of the resistance to cope. Naturally, people can have a field day with such a policy:

Hammam offers visitors glimpse into history
A hint of incense in the dark and narrow alleys leading to the 410-year-old Hammam al-Abhar in the Yemeni capital's old city reminds the visitor that each step taken is one further back into history. For centuries, the traditional Turkish-style bathhouse - "hammam" in Arabic - has been a cornerstone of life in the Middle East, and a place for social gatherings as well as for ritual bathing.  Full Story

Lebanon's history awaits its textbook
By Dalal Mawad
Recently, I saw four boys sitting at lunch near Bliss Street. They were talking about politics and student elections before moving to a conversation about civil war. Rival camps abandon confrontation following cabinet formation
Lebanon's new national-unity Cabinet signals that the March 14 and March 8 political camps have retreated from the tactics of confrontation which led the country to the brink of civil war in May 2008, a number of analysts told The Daily Star. Prime Minister Saad Hariri's government will almost certainly not alter the status quo on the most divisive issues such. Full Story

Iraq at a crossroads: Constitutional Review Committee fills in crucial gaps
By Haider Hamoudi
Iraq is at a historical crossroads on the bumpy road to democracy. The Constitutional Review Committee (CRC) has all but completed the task assigned to it by the 2005 Constitution under the chairmanship of Sheikh Humam Hamoudi, the delegate of the largest parliamentary bloc, together with Dr. Fouad Masum, the head of the Kurdish bloc. Continue
