It is almost impossible to find a square millimeter of contemporary Arab life where defeat has not expressed itself. By defeat I mean the sum of the native-colonial interaction in the last two centuries. Music was traditionally seen as a domain more immune of colonial redefinition and appropriation than other domains of the native culture.
