BEIRUT: Gunfire from the Syrian side of the border with Lebanon claimed Saturday the life of Hussein Ismail, the nephew of a former lawmaker, the national news agency reported.
Ismail, 40, died from his wounds in Wadi Khaled, north Lebanon, as a result of sniper fire from Syria, the state-run agency said, adding that the deceased was transferred to Peace Hospital in Qobeiyat, Akkar.
Ismail, the NNA said, was the nephew of former MP Jamal Ismail and served as his uncle’s personal driver.
The killing of the 40-year-old has raised tensions in Wadi Khaled, the agency said, adding that there was an armed presence in the area.
The Wadi Khaled region has witnessed a series of security incidents linked to the crisis in neighboring Syria.
