Two decades of Israeli insults

It has been a long time since the Americans were pushed too far. Not since 1990, when then Prime Minister of Israel Yitzhak Shamir rejected US demands to halt settlement activity, did the administration of George Bush Senior take action and refuse $10 billion in loan guarantees, resulting in full Israeli compliance. It is a lesson worthy of recounting, not just for the markedly

Lebanese reform mustn't harm minorities
By Rayyan al-Shawaf
Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri's recent call to abolish political confessionalism, in line with the Taif Accord, ignited a firestorm of debate across Lebanon. However, certain features underpinning the rationale for politically enshrined confessionalism have gone unmentioned. Middle East democracy and the empty dialogue with Europe
By Chibli Mallat
There are limited occasions when Hegel's "ruse of history" operates to suddenly transform an otherwise anodyne event into a momentous breakthrough. This works negatively, as when Jean JaurEs was gunned down on the eve of World War I, depriving the forces of peace from their most articulate symbol, or when Mahmoud Ahmadinejad succeeded in a troubled and surprising election. [...] Continue reading
